This semester have been a fruitful semester for me, learnt a lot from every course I took. Especially TV2, I've been working on this documentary since the beginning until the very end, which has enabled me to learn more than I expected.
Now everytime when I watched shows on TV or movies, I'm much more 'sensitive' on the cutting between different shots and scenes. I found out that steady shots and cut aways are really important somehow (they are the two we lack of) because they stabilize the whole story and make the story's tempo nice and flow, and sometimes gives the story a bit of space to imagine and also a bit of rest for the audiences to think when they watch it.
I found that our doco have too many Zoom-in and panning, and lack of cutaways, so which makes the story a bit too intense, there's no break for the audience to take a breath and think, or stop for a bit before go on to the next story.
But overall, I think we've done a good job, at least we've tried our best to do it.
I have to say that today's screening was great! Everyone's works are excellent, really.
I enjoyed this semester very much, thank you David, for teaching us and being a hard-working teaching staff. You are always patient, spend times to clarify our inquiries, and always giving us warm support and smile (for both TV2 n ICP). Thanks for teaching me these two years, from Writing media text, to ICP and Documentary.
And thank you for lending me your office last time to take photos for one of WMT's assignment, I really appreciated that, although you might forgot already. :)
Have a nice holidays, and hope to see you around. at the graduation maybe? :)

The best two nominated
Here are the best two entries for ICP blog
24/09/2007 - Worry about our ICP project - Back-up venues
20/10/2007 - Event Evaluation
24/09/2007 - Worry about our ICP project - Back-up venues

Event dvd finished!
Our event dvd finished just now, yeahh!!
I think this one is overall easier to edit (yes, I know I was saying this one is actaully harder to cut in the previous entry, and i know I'm a bit contratictory, lol) I did find it difficult to cut down guest speaker's speech at the beginning of hte editing, because most of the time they are reading from the notes they got in their hands, which is not soo visual steamulating and made the editing hard and jumpy.
But I kind of change my mind in the end because at least for this event, we've got the visual and audio's footage together, unlike our doco footage, which most of the footage audio and visual are saperated. (which we planned at the beginning and mean to film it in that way, but apparently we are wrong wrong wrong!)
I found that it's actaully more interesting to get both audio and visual together, it gives the visual more possibilities and easier to refer back to the person who's speaking. Before, I usually think that it's easy to imagine people's facial expression from their tone of speaking, but after the edit on the Stacey's story i guess it could have better effect and more influencial if the audience could actually see it when they hear it.
Therefore I'm actaully a bit regret that we didn't manage to get the shots when we recorded Stacey's audio first time because it will definitely made the story more intersting and attractive i think.

ICP final reflection
-ICP Final reflection-
I really learnt and gained a lot by organising this project; in terms of collaborating and communication skills, usage of adequate communication in different situation and to different personae, and more importantly is that this project provide me a actual opportunity to practice and apply on what I have learnt throughout this three years.
I'm interested in both PR and media, especially in event management and film making, so this event is like a scale-down project which I will possibly be working on in the future, and working in the group of six is also the other great opportunity for me to collaborate with people from different background and professions before I jump into the real work.
Organising this project actually made me discovered the strength and weakness of mine which i didn't realize before. I always thought that I'm considered as quite a straight- forward person. But in organising this project, I found that I'm a bit indecisive and concern about others' feeling too much, even if that might the right thing to do. I'm a pacifist, I'd like to have a harmony group collaboration, maybe that's one of the reasons that made me hesitate to speak up the new ideas or insist my idea.
I also discovered my unexpected strength in working on this project, as I mentioned in the previous post, I'm not only a media component in the group, but also responsible for getting sponsorship, which is more about PR work. Working on sponsorship made me realise that I'm actually more patient than I though, because approach sponsors takes times, and to get them reply takes even more longer. Although there are lot more 'NO or brush off" than 'Yes' replied, I still stick at my job and keep trying, which I'm quite proud of myself.
I also found that working in a big group has its advantages and disadvantages. It is indeed good to have variety within a group because we can critically discuss from different perspectives, and which can reduce possibility of making mistakes.
However, the communication always takes time in working with a big group, and different communication methods need to be used in different situation. For example, our group have venue and cost problems occurred in the middle of the organisation, therefore we meet up for face-to-face discussion more often than others. And our group blog is also be mostly functioned effectively as a bulletin board; announces the decision been made in the meeting and updates of progress in individual role.
Take an insight into this inter-disciplinary collaboration in general, I felt that we could have done better if everyone collaborate more in not only their profession. Everyone in my group are great, they all stick with their own profession and get their jobs done well, but on the other hand, which also somehow limited the potential idea and plan.
People don’t really give advice outside their profession because they believe that people majoring in a particular stream will have definite better knowledge of it. indeed, it could be true, but it could also vanish exciting discussion and great ideas. I know I have sounded very contradictory, but it is the where this course contradictory I guess. :P
As being a Professional Communication student who specialised in media and PR, I'm capable to work in both areas and basic journalism works. But I was assigned to do media work at the beginning because we have too many people can do PR works (3 from Prof Comm and one from PR) and also, I'm the one have relevant t media skills and have taken media courses
Although my designated role is in media, I also assist in PR fields because organising this event required a lot of PR works, and also the media's work is just a small part of our event, which will only be executed on the event that night. And more importantly, I actually found myself more interested in doing PR than media in this project; I enjoyed contacting people, organising the venue...etc.
Overall, I’m satisfied with my job as being PR and media component in the group, and I'm happy to work on both event dvd (media) and getting sponsorship (PR). They might not be the most significant and brilliant ones, but are the two of the essentials made this event complete and run well. Besides, this two areas are both I'm specialised in my final year, so this project really give me chance to employ my skills and knowledge in this two fields.
Next, the most important thing I have learnt about organising such a event is always to have a back-up plan and work simultaneously. We have encountered similar problems throughout the whole organizing process –No Back Up Plan- and also because we didn’t work simultaneously, therefore once we stuck with one, which will also delay the rest as well. We spent a lot of time on waiting one’s reply, rather than working simultaneously, which is a good lesson I learnt from organizing this project.
Overall, I'm contended and pleased that what we have done had made this event came up successfully, and I do gain a lot throughout the whole organising procedure.

-Stacey- Finished!
Hooorayyy! Stacey's story finally finished editing.
- We fixed the jump cuts, sound and title length.
- and also move around the order of the happy ending to later as a summing up of her life now, rather than putting her happy present and her sad past of lack responsibility as a mom together.
- We still keep the defocused part and snap shot photo in the end but took off the focusing back part. Besides, we fixed the camera sound in the end, makes it louder and clearer, in order to show the snap shot idea more clearly, as well as added in the footage of she and neighborhood kids sitting together with credits.
It has been a long journey for me, from the beginning of filming till now. My previous group work for film or tv, I'm usually doing producer's job, the editing part is where i seldom touch on, the time that I touched on it, was only fixing the minor changes.
This is the first time that I do both camera and editing. It is definitely a great opportunity for me to learn new things, and seeing things from different perspectives. For example, now I fully understand the carefulness of zoom in/out, the adequate cutaways and the importance of steady wide shots can make a lot of differences to a film.
I'm glad I have opportunity to practical develop my media skills in my last semester. Although it has put on my workload (especially the rest 3 courses I'm doing this semester are all core subjects), I'm still contended with the time and efforts I spent on it.

'Strength and Numbers' dvd editing progress
Have being stucked in the editing suite for TV doco before, now I finally get something else to watch. ha..ha... (bitter laugh)
Yes, we've started editing on our ICP event from last week after the event 'officially' finished, and finally it has kinda forming into shape.
I was thinking to do a montage of the event and make it as a short commercial for On Track@ Peter Mac before I started the editing. But it looks a bit not flow/comprehensive if excludes the guest speaker's speech as opening, and Christi's hosting because we don't have any audio footage are suitable to be used as voice over to explain what kind of event it is and the prizes, sponsorship involved in the event.
Therefore, we've decided to edit the dvd chronologically, to keep the important bits and to compress the time. The dvd is expected to turn into a 7-10 minutes event dvd for On Track@ Peter Mac as a record, which they can show to the future sponsors, and also be distributed to the attendees as a memorabilia.
The only thing i'm worry is the constrained time for the editing, will try my best to finish it as a final cut standard, but.. yah.. a bit worry.

Event Evaluation
Our event is successful overall by evaluated from several aspects; number of event attendees, achievement in sponsorship, website hits and the feedbacks from peers.
Firstly, we have compared the number of attendees in our event with On Track@ Peter Mac’s previous events, and we found that the number of attendees in our event is twice more than the previous events they hold, although that’s still a big gap from our initial target numbers.
Secondly, our achievement in getting sponsorships is another way we use to evaluate our project. Although we couldn’t get sponsors to fund our project, we have successfully approached suitable sponsors to donate door prizes and raffle prizes, which are considered one of the essentials that made our event run well.
Besides, we have also put the website hits of our myspace and the number of members joined our facebook group into accounts, but unfortunately they didn’t work well in terms of interests our target group and assists us estimate the possible attendees. We got Myspace webpage and facebook group page settled, but we couldn’t find other channels to advertise/promote the website link except through On Track@ Peter Mac’s and publish them on the posters and invites.
However, apparently the social workers at on Track@ Peter Mac are very happy that we set up the facebook group account for them, because it will be a good start for them to develop their networks online and which also provide them another platform to keep the target group updated timely, as well as a great time saving for them.
The quality feedbacks from peers is also one of the many ways we used to evaluate our project, especially the feedbacks from those that attended our event. They have given us their honest feedback in terms of the schedule of the event and their overall personal feeling of the event. Most importantly, they provide us their observation/inspection of attendees’ reaction and response on the night, which have gave us a clear idea of the overall responses from the attendees.
